This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Gary Pickford-Hopkins (vocals)

BIOGRAPHY:

Great, fine vocalist, he was very underrated in my opinion. Gary Pickford-Hopkins was born in Neath, Wales in 1948. The first band I know with him is The Smokestacks, when he was just 16.

THE SMOKESTACKS

The Smokestacks was a band from Neath, in Wales. In 1964, the band included singer Gary Pickford-Hopkins and keyboardist Phil Ryan:

EYES OF BLUE

Eyes Of Blue was a band from Wales. It´s very difficult finding info about their beginnings, so this is just my guess - so if someone can provide reliable info, it would be very nice.

I think this was their original lineup:

EYES OF BLUE #1
1964-?
êThe Smokestacks
Wyndham Rees
vocals
Gary Pickford-Hopkins
vocals, guitar
Melvyn Davies
guitar
Ritchie Francis
bass, keyboards
David Thomas
drums

I don´t know if their first two singles were recorded by this incarnation of the band, or by the following one (with John Weathers and Ray Taff Williams).

This was the new lineup for Eyes Of Blue when they were joined by John ´Pugwash´ Weathers:

EYES OF BLUE #?
?
êThe Smokestacks
Wyndham Rees
vocals
Ray Taff Williams
guitar
Ritchie Francis
bass
Phil Ryan
keyboards
John ´Pugwash´ Weathers
drums

They won the Battle of the Bands competition for Melody Maker in 1965.

After releasing 4 singles and their first album, Crossroads of time, Wyndham Rees left the band.

Eyes Of Blue

Around 1969, Eyes Of Blue became a quintet:

The band was used by producer Lou Reizner in Buzzy Linhart´s album Buzzy (but I don´t know if this included Gary). They also played in the soundtrack for the movie Toy grabbers by Quincy Jones. And the band also appears in the movie Connecting rooms in 1969, starring Bette Davis.

They released their 2nd and last album, In fields of Ardath, again produced by Lou Reizner (with liner notes by Quincy Jones), and they soon split in 1970, to carry on under another monicker, Big Sleep.

WILD TURKEY

Wild Turkey - from left to right: John ´Pugwash´ Weathers, Graham Williams, Gary Pickford-Hopkins, Jon Blackmore, Glenn Cornick

Wild Turkey was a band formed by Glenn Cornick (ex-Jethro Tull). After looking for musicians, I think this was their original lineup, early in 1971:

WILD TURKEY #1
1971
êHuman Leg
Alan ´Tweke´ Lewis
guitar
Graham Williams
guitar
Glenn Cornick
bass
John ´Pugwash´ Weathers

But John Weathers and Graham Williams left very soon to join forces with Graham Bond.

Wild Turkey - from left to right: Jeff Jones, Glenn Cornick, Gary Pickford-Hopkins, Alan ´Tweke´ Lewis, Jon Blackmore

This must be the second lineup for Wild Turkey, now with Jon Blackmore on guitar:

WILD TURKEY #2

Jon Blackmore
guitar
Glenn Cornick
bass
Jeff Jones
drums

Wild Turkey

In 1972, Mick Dyche replaced one of the original members in Wild Turkey (Jon Blackmore), in order to record their 2nd album, called Turkey, with the band also recruiting Steve Gurl on keyboards:

Tweke Lewis left them in 1973 to join Man.

Wild Turkey - from left to right: Glenn Cornick, Mick Dyche, Bernie Marsden, Steve Gurl, Gary Pickford-Hopkins, Jeff Jones

When Gary Tweke Lewis left Wild Turkey, they recruited Bernie Marsden. This was probably around 1973:

WILD TURKEY #?

êUFO
Bernie Marsden
guitar
Mick Dyche

Glenn Cornick
bass
Steve Gurl
keyboards
Jeff Jones
drums

Many years later, some live albums have appeared. Live in Edinburgh was recorded live in 1973, by the lineup with Jeff Jones.

Wild Turkey: Gary Pickford-Hopkins and Glenn Cornick

When Wild Turkey drummer Jeff Jones left them, he was replaced by Kevin Currie:

WILD TURKEY #?

Bernie Marsden
guitar
Mick Dyche

Glenn Cornick
bass
Steve Gurl
keyboards
Kevin Currie
drums

The band was working in a third album, but disbanded when Pickford-Hopkins left in June 1974 to join Rick Wakeman.

The live album Final performance features the lineup with Kevin Currie. It was recorded on June 1974, plus 3 tracks from June 1973.

There's also a new album with unreleased tracks, called Rarest Turkey. It features different lineups, and among others: Gary Pickford-Hopkins, Glenn Cornick, Bernie Marsden, Mick Dyche, Morgan Fisher, Gary 'Tweke' Lewis, Jon Blackmore, Kevin Currie, Steve Gurl, etc.

This was the new Rick Wakeman Band still in 1974, now with James Crampton on guitar:

They toured in 1974, as well as during the Wembley special gig (with scenography on ice - see some videos below) and the Australian tour in 1975.

After that, most of the band changed in 1975, only staying Ashley Holt, Roger Hodgson and Roger Newell with Rick.

NETWORK

Gary Pickford-Hopkins joins Network as their new vocalist, probably still in 1978:

NETWORK #1
?
Graham Foster
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass, vocals
John Gosling
keyboards
Ron Berg
drums

They recorded an album, but it remained unreleased for some reason. A pity, as it´s a great album with contribution by Jack Lancaster on sax.

Network split around 1979, probably after more lineup changes (I think Bruce Rowland also drummed for them).

In 1980, friends Gary Pickford-Hopkins and Ray ´Taff´ Williams get together with a new project, called The Houseband:

AND THEN...

It´s not easy tracking down Gary Pickford-Hopkins career, so I have big gaps in his bio. Can someone help me, please?

WILD TURKEY (again)

In the mid 90s (maybe 1996?) Wild Turkey was reformed by Glenn Cornick, with past members Gary Pickford-Hopkins and Tweke Lewis, and new drummer Brian Thomas

In 2006, Wild Turkey reforms in order to record a new album, You & me in the jungle. It features some of the original members, such as Graham Williams or John ´Pugwash´ Weathers, as well as Glenn Cornick´s mate Clive Bunker on drums.

As far as I know, Graham Williams and Steve Gurl didn´t make the tour, so a new guitarist was recruited, Brendan McGrath, as well as two different keyboardists. In September 2006, Wild Turkey plays in Italy with Fabio Mastrogregori:
