This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Dave Tedstone

Dave Tedstone [guitar]:

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Great guitarist, Dave Tedstone has played with many great bands and players. His lengthy career is very difficult to trace, so I try to place here all the details I know.

I haven´t biographical info about Dave, but I think he was born in Hereford, as some of his first bands were based there. His first band was The Cruisers (from 1959 to 1961), an amateur band that went pro for a short period, but then, Dave and Lee Starr (real name, Jon Best) moved to Lee Starr And The Astrals in 1962.

LEE STARR AND THE ASTRALS

Lee Starr And The Astrals was formed in 1962, after a change of name from The Cruisers. This was a different lineup for the band, probably one of the earliest ones:

LEE STARR AND THE ASTRALS #?
?
Lee Starr
vocals
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Percy Francis
bass
Pat Rose
drums

One more thing. Lee Starr And The Astrals backed singer Kenny Hollywood (who released his famous single ´Magic star´ in 1962), for live gigs. Which lineup of the band was then?

There are some compilations of Joe Meek productions, where some tracks by Lee Starr And The Astrals appear (they weren´t released as a singles on their own; they only appear in these later compilations). Some of the tracks are: ´Come back to me´ and ´Walkin´ with my angel´, both featured in the 4CD boxset by Joe Meek: Portrait of a genius - the RGM legacy (2005). Again the question is, does Tedstone appear in these tracks?

This was another lineup of Lee Starr And The Astrals, probably around 1964:

LEE STARR AND THE ASTRALS #?
?
Lee Starr
vocals
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Percy Francis
bass
Rob Harris
drums

Sometime later, they became a quintet with the addition of Verden Allen.

Lee Starr And The Astrals becomes a quintet when Verden Allen joins (when this happened, 1964 or 1966?):

LEE STARR AND THE ASTRALS #?
Mar 66-1966
Lee Starr
vocals
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Percy Francis
bass
Verden Allen
keyboards
Rob Harris
drums

But Tedstone left the band around January/February 1966, moving to London to play some auditions.

They recorded a self-titled album, Doc Thomas Group, in October 1966 and released only in Italy in January 1967. It was later reissued on CD under the new title The Italian job, with lots of bonus tracks (also from the band The Silence).

By the way, it seems that the band recorded 6-8 additional tracks located in the missing master tapes and thus remain unreleased. If anyone would know something about it, please let me know!

When drummer Bob Hall left Doc Thomas Group, Dale Buffin Griffin arrived:

The band recorded tracks for a second album that was never released (working title, Reflections), although some of the tracks appear as bonus in the deluxe edition CD of the album (some bonus include Dave Tedstone, some others include Les Harvey).

Tedstone pulled out of the Cartoone USA tour just several weeks before it began, being replaced by the late Les Harvey. Cartoone supported Led Zeppelin on that tour from April to June 1969, as they shared management and record label.

SALT & PEPPER

This was a band led by Junior Marvin (still known as Junior Kerr, and playing organ at that time). Dave Tedstone joined the band and stayed for 6 months in the latter part of 1970. They rehearsed and recorded several demos for DJM. Earlier demos had Micky Keene on guitar. The demos with Tedstone also included Bobby Tench on rhythm guitar as well as backing vocals, and Clive Chaman (Ed Spevock wasn´t the drummer at the demos, and I don´t know who else was at those sessions).

For some gigs over Christmas, they expanded into a bigger band, with Murray Head and Bobby Tench on vocals.

HERBIE GOINS & THE NIGHT TIMERS

Dave Tedstone was also a member of Herbie Goins & The Night Timers:

Maybe this happened in 1970?

There is some LP acetate from an album recorded at Trident Studios by this lineup about 1970/1, probably with the contribution of Chris Mercer on sax, but as far as I know, this has never been released. Anyone knows/has a copy of that, please!!?

Joe Moretti (who had been a member of the band but when Ronnie Jones was the lead singer) also played some gigs as a guest with the band.

Next change in Herbie Goins & The Night Timers was the bassist, as John Perry left the band being replaced by the great Phil Chen:

GRANNY´S INTENTIONS

Dave Tedstone was a member of the revamped edition of Granny´s Intentions (renamed as Granny´s New Intentions), probably in mid 1970 (as their lead guitarist John Hockedy left the band in June 1970). This is my guess for the lineup:

GRANNY´S INTENTIONS #?
?
Johnny Duhan
vocals
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Pete Cummins
bass, flute
John Ryan
keyboards
Pat Nash
drums
Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell Bandê

The band established a regular weekly date at London´s Marquee, and toured Ireland, with/staying at Phil Lynott's home. Hopes of a follow up album were dashed by lack of sales. In attendance at their residency were Gary Moore, Henry McCullough and Alan Cartwright (an old mate of Tedstone in Freddie Mac band).

GLENN ´ROSS´ CAMPBELL BAND

After August 1971, when most of the members of Juicy Lucy left the band, Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell approached some of the original members in order to form a new band, and Dave Tedstone was called to be the guitarist in that project:

GLENN ´ROSS´ CAMPBELL BAND #?

+ maybe others, unknown to me. Help!

They started rehearsals, and made some home recordings, but finally, Tedstone got the call from Juicy Lucy, so he abandoned this project. I guess the band finally went nowhere...

JUICY LUCY

But Marsden´s stay in Juicy Lucy was really brief, being substituted by Dave Tedstone. This was the band around November 1971:

JUICY LUCY #8

Paul Williams

But Jean Roussel left after a few weeks, to join Cat Stevens live band.

For a while, Juicy Lucy stayed without keyboardist, after the departure of Jean Roussel:

But they got Mike Deacon a little later.

Andy Pyle´s replacement was Chrissie Stewart:

There were some other lineups, with Frankie Miller as lead vocalist after Paul Williams left, and Bobby Harrison replacing Miller, before the band splitting in 1972, but I haven´t been able to find the complete details. Help, please! Also, Nick Judd was part of the band, but cannot place him in the timeline...
