This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

BIOGRAPHY:

Jimmy Bain

Very powerful bassist, he has played with some of best bands in hard rock scene, and he´s still active, which makes me very glad!

Jimmy Bain was born James Stewart Bain on December 19th, 1947, in Newtonmore, Scotland.

NICK AND THE SINNERS

As far as I know, this was Jimmy Bain´s first band, in Dunbar, Scotland. Sorry, I don´t have any other details about them.

THE EMBERS

Then, Jimmy Bain joined The Embers circa 1969. I´ve been told that they were a tremendous band at the time, up with their Glasgow rivals The Beatstalkers, both well supported band but never hit the big time.

But I haven´t any additional info about The Embers, so if someone can help...

After that, Jimmy emigrated to Vernon, British Columbia in Canada with his parents, but that fact didn´t stop his musical career, as we´re going to read.

STREET NOISE

Street Noise was a Canadian band, based on Vernon, BC. They had several lineups, and I don´t have complete info, but for some time, they were a trio:

STREET NOISE #?
?
Jimmy Bain
bass, vocals
Jim Bibby
keyboards, vocals
Dave Jonsson
drums, vocals

I know there were more lineups as a quartet, also with Jimmy Bain, but can´t find that info. Can someone help, please? I guess Jimmy´s mate Robert (Smiggy) Smith also played at the same time here.

In 1972, they acted as backup band for John Lee Hooker!
Other info on members of Street Noise (I know up to 7 members)
Not enough info (6): Jim Bibby, Dave Jonsson, Doug Louie, Linnie Patterson, Jim Powell, Robert Smith

CHOKER

Choker was formed by Jimmy Bain and Robert Smith, after returning from Canada to Scotland:

CHOKER #1
1972-1973
Rod MacKenzie
guitar
Robert Smith
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Derek Weir
drums
The Ratsê
Blueê

They even recorded an Emidisc promo acetate in 1973.

Other info on members of Choker (I know up to 4 members)
Not enough info (3): Rod MacKenzie, Robert Smith, Derek Weir

HARLOT

This was the lineup for the band, formed in January 1974:

HARLOT #1
Jan 74-Jul 75
Mick Dyche
guitar
Mike Japp
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Ricky Munro
drums

Jimmy Bain left the band in July 1975, when he got a call from Ritchie Blackmore.

Other info on members of Harlot (I know up to 4 members)
Old pages (1): Mick Dyche
Not enough info (2): Mike Japp, Ricky Munro

RAINBOW

Rainbow live: overall vision of the stage

In July 1975, Jimmy Bain joins Rainbow after turning down an invitation to join The Babys:

RAINBOW #2
Jul 75-Aug 75
êHarlot
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Mickey Lee Soule
keyboards
Gary Driscoll
drums

And very soon, the change of musicians in Rainbow's band starts... In August 1975, Driscoll leaves.

In August 1975, the great Cozy Powell replaces Gary Driscoll:

RAINBOW #3
Aug 75-Oct 75
êStrange Brew
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Mickey Lee Soule
keyboards
Cozy Powell
drums

And in October 1975, new lineup...

Rainbow lineup: From left to right: Tony Carey, Ronnie James Dio, Ritchie Blackmore, Cozy Powell, Jimmy Bain

In October 1975, Tony Carey replaces Mickey Lee Soule:

RAINBOW #4
Oct 75-Jan 77
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Tony Carey
keyboards
Cozy Powell
drums
Wild Horsesê

So, at this moment, none from the Elf members (except Ronnie Dio) remained in Rainbow.

This was one of the more stable (and superb) lineups. They released a fantastic album, Rising. They also released a very good live album On stage (2LP, now 1CD).

Along the years, as it happens with Deep Purple, there has been released more live material from the band. In 1990, it was released Live in Germany, a double CD from the Rainbow 1976 European tour (On stage had been recorded in the Japanese tour).

But in January 1977, Jimmy Bain is fired.

Other info on members of Rainbow (I know up to 27 members)
Already covered (1): Ronnie James Dio
Old pages (2): Don Airey, Cozy Powell
To be covered (23): Dee Beale, Ritchie Blackmore, Graham Bonnet, Chuck Burgi, Tony Carey, Mark Clarke, Bob Daisley, Gary Driscoll, Roger Glover, Jack Green, Craig Gruber, John Miceli, Paul Morris, Candice Night, John O´Reilly, Lin Robinson, Bobby Rondinelli, David Rosenthal, Greg Smith, Mickey Lee Soule, David Stone, Joe Lynn Turner, Doogie White

JOHN CALE BAND

For a while, he played with John Cale, but I haven't details about the lineups. Help, please!

He recorded a 12" EP with Cale, Animal justice. The musicians featured are: Chris Spedding (guitar), Ritchie Fliegler (guitar), Jimmy Bain (bass), Bruce Brody (keyboards), Kevin Currie (drums).

Jimmy played live with John Cale again in 1980, as we´re going to read.

GOING SOLO...

Around 1978, Jimmy Bain recorded some demos, produced by Matthew Fisher (from Procol Harum fame), but they still remain unreleased. A pity...

THE GREEDY BASTARDS

This was a fun band, usually comprising members of the band Thin Lizzy. This was the lineup announced for a February 1978 gig:

THE GREEDY BASTARDS #?
Feb 78
Phil Lynott
vocals, bass
Gary Holton
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Rat Scabies
drums

As we can see, it also included members of Heavy Metal Kids, The Damned. Finally, the gig was cancelled.

A different lineup in July 1978 was:

THE GREEDY BASTARDS #?
Jul 78
Phil Lynott
vocals, bass
Gary Moore
guitar
Scott Gorham
guitar
Chris Spedding
guitar
Steve Jones
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Paul Cook
drums
Brian Downey
drums

This time, with members of Thin Lizzy and Sex Pistols.

Other info on members of The Greedy Bastards (I know up to 12 members)

WILD HORSES

The first news about Brian Robertson and Jimmy Bain making plans for a joint project, Wild Horses, arise in March 1977, a few months before Robertson leaves Thin Lizzy.

In a very unknown episode, Jimmy McCulloch was for a very short time a part of Wild Horses.

WILD HORSES #
? - 1978
êThin Lizzy
êRainbow
Brian Robertson
guitar, vocals
Jimmy McCulloch
guitar, vocals
Jimmy Bain
bass, vocals
Kenny Jones
drums

During Jimmy´s short stint with Wild Horses, he was merely a guitar player / backing vocalist, with Brian Robertson and Jimmy Bain doing the lead vocals.

They were rehearsing for a while, but Jimmy was soon replaced by Neil Carter still in 1978.

The drummer chosen is ex-Small Faces drummer, Kenny Jones:

WILD HORSES #2
1978-?
Brian Robertson
guitar, vocals
Neil Carter
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass, vocals
Kenny Jones
drums
The Whoê

But Kenny Jones left them to join The Who, just when Wild Horses were to start a tour.
Wild Horse get a new drummer around November 1978:

WILD HORSES #3
Nov 78-Jan 79
Brian Robertson
guitar, vocals
Neil Carter
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass, vocals
Dixie Lee
drums

But Dixie left them soon, in January 1979.

Wild Horses

New drummer in Wild Horses was Clive Edwards:

WILD HORSES #4
Jan 79-Oct 80
Brian Robertson
guitar, vocals
Neil Carter
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass, vocals
UFOê

They appeared at Reading Rock Festival in August 1979.

This was the lineup that recorded The first album, produced by Trevor Rabin, in the period between December 1979 and January 1980.

After several tours (where they had some special guests from time to time, such as Phil Lynott or Michael Schenker), Neil Carter left them in October 1980 (or was August 1980?) to join UFO.

JOHN CALE BAND (again)

John Cale assembled a one-off band for a festival in Holland in June 1980:

JOHN CALE BAND #?
Jun 80
John Cale
vocals
Ollie Halsall
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Chris Thompson
keyboards
Jeff Reynolds
trumpet
Rudy Van Dyck
sax
Judy Nylon
backing vocals

Other info on members of John Cale Band (I know up to 24 members)
Already covered (1): Clive Edwards
Old pages (2): Timi Donald, Pat Donaldson
To be covered (14): John Cale, Ollie Halsall, Andy Heermans, David Lichtenstein, Judy Nylon, Deantoni Parks, Jeff Reynolds, Chris Spedding, Joe Stefko, Jeff Thall, Chris Thomas, Chris Thompson, Rudy Van Dyck, David Young
Not enough info (6): Marc Aaron, Joe Bidewell, Doug Bowne, Deerfrance, Paul Page, George Scott

WILD HORSES (again)

They get John Lockton to replace Neil Carter around October 1980:

WILD HORSES #5
Oct 80-Jun 81
Brian Robertson
guitar, vocals
John Lockton
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass, vocals

They released a second album, Stand your ground, released in May 1981. But the group's stability was damaged when Brian 'Robbo' Robertson and Clive Edwards left the band in June 1981 at the end of a tour.

Jimmy Bain quickly recruited new musicians, and they made their first live gig at The Marquee in August 1981:

WILD HORSES #6
Jun 81-Oct 81
êLionheart
êLionheart
Reuben Archer
vocals
John Lockton
guitar
Laurence Archer
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Frank Noon
drums
Stampedeê
Stampedeê

But Reuben & Laurence Archer soon leave the band to form Stampede, and they finally split in October 1981.

Other info on members of Wild Horses (I know up to 11 members)
Already covered (1): Clive Edwards
Old pages (3): Reuben Archer, John Lockton, Jimmy McCulloch
To be covered (6): Laurence Archer, Neil Carter, Kenny Jones, Dixie Lee, Frank Noon, Brian Robertson

SCORPIONS

In a very confusing episode, I remember how I read in a magazine that Jimmy Bain and Bobby Rondinelli had joined Scorpions for their new studio album, thus considering Francis Buchholz and Herman Rarebell out of the band:

SCORPIONS #?
?
Klaus Meine
vocals
Rudolf Schenker
guitar
Matthias Jabs
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Bobby Rondinelli
drums

But, according later magazines, they finally decided calling Francis and Herman back to the band. The album, Love at first sting, was finally released, and Bain and Rondinelli are not credited. But, many years later, I read in an interview that Bobby Rondinelli confirms the fact, and he says he still thinks some of the tracks in the album feature Jimmy and Bobby. Who knows the truth? :)

Other info on members of Scorpions (I know up to 21 members)
To be covered (8): Mario Argandoña, Francis Buchholz, James Kottak, Herman Rarebell, Bobby Rondinelli, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, John Young
Not enough info (12): Ariane Arcu, Johann Daansen, Wolfgang Dziony, Lother Heimberg, Matthias Jabs, Christian Kolonovits, Rudi Lenners, Pavel Maciwoda, Klaus Meine, Ralph Rieckermann, Jurgen Rosenthal, Rudolf Schenker

PHIL LYNOTT BAND

During a short hiatus in Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott also made a short solo Scandinavian tour in October 1982 under the name Phil Lynott And The Soul Band, with this lineup:

PHIL LYNOTT BAND #?
Oct 82-Nov 82
êThin Lizzy
êThin Lizzy
Phil Lynott
vocals, guitar
Gus Isidore
guitar
Jerome Rimson
bass
Jimmy Bain
keyboards
Darren Wharton

Mark Nauseef
drums

Yes, Jimmy Bain played as keyboardist in the tour! :) Many people don't know, but Jimmy is a very skilled keyboardist. Here, Bain played as extra keyboard player behind Darren Warton.

Lemmy and old mate Brian Robertson made guest appearances in some gig in Sweden.

In December 1982, Phil Lynott also made a brief Irish tour, with this new lineup:

PHIL LYNOTT BAND #?

êThin Lizzy

DIO

After leaving Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio started his own project. Originally called Bible Black, it finally adopted the name of Dio:

DIO #1
Oct 82-May 83
êBlack Sabbath
êBlack Sabbath
Vivian Campbell
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums

It was formed with his old friends Bain and Appice, and recruiting a young and superb Vivian Campbell on guitar. They start this new venture around October 1982.

They release a superb debut, Holy diver, a must in everybody´s heavy collection. Everybody´s playing here fantastically.

In May 1983, their lineup is augmented with keyboardist Claude Schnell for their first tour:

DIO #2
May 83-Mar 86
Vivian Campbell
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Claude Schnell
keyboards
Vinny Appice
drums

Their 2nd album is The last in line.

This lineup also released a song, ´Hungry for heaven´, in the soundtrack for the movie Vision quest (1985). Other artists appearing in the soundtrack: Journey, John Waite, Red Rider, Sammy Hagar, Foreigner, etc.

After their 3rd album, Sacred heart, Vivian Campbell leaves the band in March 1986.

In March 1986, Vivian Campbell is replaced by Craig Goldie:

DIO #3
Mar 86-1988
êDriver
Craig Goldie
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Claude Schnell
keyboards
Vinny Appice
drums

Their next work is a live mini-LP, Intermission.

This lineup also released a song, ´Hide in the rainbow´, in the soundtrack for the movie Iron Eagle (1986). Other artists appearing in the soundtrack: Queen, King Kobra (with Carmine Appice), Helix, Eric Martin, etc.

In 1987, they release Dream evil. But soon after, Ronnie James Dio started making lots of changes in the band. First to leave is Craig Goldie.

After a long period, Dio chooses a very young guitar player, Rowan Robertson:

DIO #4
1988-Jun 89
Rowan Robertson
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Claude Schnell
keyboards
Vinny Appice
drums

But soon, Jimmy Bain and Claude Schnell also leave, around June 1989.

CINDERELLA

In July 1988, while he still was a member of Dio, Jimmy lends a hand to the band Cinderella, as their bassist Eric Brittingham had a baby, and decided not to tour with them. So, Jimmy Bain is called to play the American tour:

CINDERELLA #?
1988
êDio
Tom Keifer
vocals
Jeff LaBar
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Fred Coury
drums
Dioê

Other info on members of Cinderella (I know up to 10 members)
To be covered (2): Jody Cortez, Kevin Valentine
Not enough info (7): Eric Brittingham, Gary Corbett, Fred Coury, Tony Destra, Tom Keifer, Jeff LaBar, Michael Smerick

Jimmy was supposed to come back to Dio to record a new album during Christmas 1988.

BAND OF THIEVES

Spanish edition of Metal Hammer magazine announced in November 1989 that Jimmy was playing with this band, but I can't find info on them! Help, please!

WWIII

This was next project by Jimmy Bain and Vinny Appice:

WWIII #?
?
Mandy Lion
vocals
Tracy G
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums

They released a self-titled album, WWIII, including a cover of a T.Rex song, ´Children of the revolution´. But after some time, Bain and Appice leave the band.

Other info on members of WWIII (I know up to 4 members)
To be covered (2): Vinny Appice, Tracy G

C C DEVILLE BAND

Around February 1992, rock magazines told that guitarist C.C. De Ville (from Poison) had formed his own solo band, with:

C C DEVILLE BAND #
1992
C C DeVille
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Carmine Appice
drums
+ vocalist unknown to me. Help, please!

But I never heard about it again. Has anybody more info about it, please?

DIO (again)

In 1992, after leaving Black Sabbath for a 2nd time, Dio and Vinny Appice call his old mate Jimmy Bain again, trying to resurrect Dio:

DIO #?
1992-Mar 93
êBlack Sabbath
êBlack Sabbath
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums

They started looking for a guitarist, but in March 1993, Jimmy Bain is out of the band again.

THE KEY

Next I heard about Jimmy was a new project called The Key, around 1996. Info needed, please!

DIO (again)

And in 1999, it happens again. After different temptative lineups for recording a new studio album, Magica (at first, rumour had it about the album scheduled to be recorded with Aynsley Dunbar and Bob Daisley, although the musicians used were Bain and Wright), it finally marks Jimmy Bain´s return to Dio. In fact, all the musicians had been in Dio in the past:

DIO #?
1999-Jan 02
Craig Goldie
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
OR
Chuck Garric
bass
Scott Warren
keyboards
Simon Wright
drums

But some other commitments by Jimmy Bain prevented him to play in some of the tours, so Chuck Garric filled his spot in some of the tours (for example, when they played in my city...).

In January 2002, Craig Goldie left Dio again, being replaced by the great Doug Aldrich:

DIO #?
Jan 02-Apr 03
Doug Aldrich
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Scott Warren
keyboards
Simon Wright
drums
Whitesnakeê

But in April 2003, Aldrich leaves.

In April 2003, Craig Goldie is back in Dio again (although the first name announced was Warren De Martini):

DIO #?
Apr 03-2003
Craig Goldie
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Scott Warren
keyboards
Simon Wright
drums

But at the end of 2003, Jimmy Bain leaves them.

Other info on members of Dio (I know up to 18 members)

To be covered (14): Doug Aldrich, Vinny Appice, Vivian Campbell, Teddy Cook, Larry Dennison, Tracy G, Chuck Garric, Craig Goldie, James Kottak, Jeff Pilson, Rowan Robertson, Claude Schnell, Scott Warren, Simon Wright

THE HOLLYWOOD ALLSTARZ

When Jeff Pilson left, Vinny Appice called his mate Jimmy Bain:

THE HOLLYWOOD ALLSTARZ #?
?
Chas West
vocals
Carlos Cavazo
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums

The whole band also plays under the name 3 Legged Dogg.

They augment the lineup to include two drummers, thus enriching their sound:

THE HOLLYWOOD ALLSTARZ #?
?
Chas West
vocals
Carlos Cavazo
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums
Krigger
drums

I know there has been more lineups (Mick Brown on drums, Craig Goldie on guitar, for example or Sean McNabb depping for Bain), but don´t know the details, so if someone can help here, it would be very appreciated, please...

Other info on members of The Hollywood AllStarz (I know up to 9 members)
To be covered (6): Vinny Appice, Mick Brown, Carlos Cavazo, Craig Goldie, Sean McNabb, Jeff Pilson

3 LEGGED DOGG

Band formed with members of The Hollywood AllStarz, plus Brian Young:

3 LEGGED DOGG #1
?
Chas West
vocals
Brian Young
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums

After a while, they expanded into a quintet adding Carlos Cavazo.

This is the 2nd lineup for 3 Legged Dogg, now as a quintet:

3 LEGGED DOGG #2
?
Chas West
vocals
Carlos Cavazo
guitar
Brian Young
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Vinny Appice
drums
Heaven And Hellê

They released their first album, Frozen summer in 2006.

When Vinny Appice was called to join Heaven & Hell, the band was put on hold for a while.

Other info on members of 3 Legged Dogg (I know up to 5 members)
To be covered (2): Vinny Appice, Carlos Cavazo

LAST IN LINE

In 2013, a few years after Ronnie James Dio´s demise, his four founding members in Dio reunite under the new monicker Last In Line, with new vocalist Andrew Freeman:

LAST IN LINE #?
2013-Jan 16
Andrew Freeman
vocals
Vivian Campbell
guitar
Jimmy Bain
bass
Claude Schnell
keyboards
Vinny Appice
drums

Vivian Campbell was still a member of Def Leppard, as well as appearing in other parallel projects.
Other info on members of Last In Line (I know up to 5 members)
To be covered (3): Vinny Appice, Vivian Campbell, Claude Schnell

And the sad news arrived when it was announced that Jimmy Bain had passed away on January 24th, 2016.

    • Guests: Huey Lewis + Judie Tzuke (RIP: Jimmy Bain)

    • Comments: A great band, commanded by the much-missed Phil Lynott. The lineup for this album was: Phil Lynott (vocals, bass) / Scott Gorham (guitar) / Gary Moore (guitar) / Brian Downey (drums). But they got some friends to play with them: Jimmy Bain (bass), Huey Lewis (harmonica, as Bluesy Hughie). The thanks credits mention Mark Nauseef (drums), as he played with the band substituting Brian Downey for a short tour. The album was recorded from December 1978 to February 1979.

The album is completed with live tracks by Scorpions, Dio (featuring ´Hungry for heaven´, recorded live at San Diego in December 1985), Y&T, Rush, Motorhead, Accept, Kiss and even a track by Jimi Hendrix.
    • My opinion: The track, ´Stars´ is an absolute delight to those who (like me) love guitar solos. Many of my favourites reunited for a good cause. People from Iron Maiden, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Dokken, etc. It was written by Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain & Vivian Campbell. It features a different singer for each verse, plus 6 guitar solos (played by Craig Goldie, Eddie Ojeda, Vivian Campbell, Brad Gillis, Neal Schon, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vivian Campbell (again), George Lynch, Carlos Cavazo, Brad Gillis (again), Craig Goldie (again), Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser). After more verses, there's another guitar solo by Neal Schon.
