This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

BIOGRAPHY:

Fantastic keyboardist, he was the original keyboardist in one of my favourite bands ever, Keef Hartley Band. His real name was Peter Dines, but he also appeared credited with his nickname Dino Dines. He was born in Hertford, on December 17th, 1944.

APOSTOLIC INTERVENTION

First band I know with Dino is Apostolic Intervention.

This was the personnel for the band Apostolic Intervention in 1966:

APOSTOLIC INTERVENTION #?
?
Angus Shirley
guitar
Bob Argent
bass
Dino Dines
keyboards
Jerry Shirley
drums

Steve Marriott (who was to form Humble Pie with Jerry Shirley sometime later) gave the band a new song, ´(Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me´, that became the band´s first single. Marriott also acted as producer and played bass in the song as well as performing backing vocals.

WAGES OF SIN

Tim Renwick joins Wages Of Sin, circa 1968, replacing Ivan Carling:

WAGES OF SIN #?
1968
Colin Freeman
Dino Dines
keyboards
Vic Farrar
Jerry Shirley
drums

KEEF HARTLEY BAND

One of the finest blues bands I've ever heard, believe me! This was the first incarnation of the band:

KEEF HARTLEY BAND #1
?
Owen Finnegan
vocals
Ian Cruickshank
guitar (as Spit James)
Gary Thain
bass
Dino Dines
keyboards
Keef Hartley
drums

They started recording their first album, but they felt something didn't work. So they changed the vocalist.

They try with a different vocalist, but again, no luck:

KEEF HARTLEY BAND #2
?
Sam Holland
vocals
Ian Cruickshank
guitar (as Spit James)
Gary Thain
bass
Dino Dines
keyboards
Keef Hartley
drums

But they finally called the great Miller Anderson to join as vocalist and lead guitarist, in November 1968:

KEEF HARTLEY BAND #3
Nov 68-?
Miller Anderson
guitar, vocals
Ian Cruickshank
guitar (as Spit James)
Gary Thain
bass
Dino Dines
keyboards
Keef Hartley
drums

Keef found in Miller a fantastic companion, a superb guitarist and singer, who composed most of the songs.

With Miller's voice, they release the fantastic album, Halfbreed, recorded in three days, with a funny introduction where you can hear John Mayall's conversation with Keef, when he tells him he's out of Bluesbreakers band. The track is appropiately named ´Sacked´. Dino (here, credited as Peter Dines) co-writes half of the tracks in the album. Notice has to be made about all the guitar parts in the album were recorded by Spit. Miller just included the vocals, no guitars.

In the album, there's a horn section to enrich their sound (mainly Hartley former bandmates in John Mayall band):

  • Henry Lowther (trumpet, violin)

  • Harry Beckett (trumpet)

  • Lyn Dobson (tenor sax, flute)

  • Chris Mercer (tenor sax)

  • But, after a while, Spit James left the band, leaving Miller Anderson as the only guitarist.

    AND THEN

I don´t know what Dino did meanwhile, but he finally rejoined Keef Hartley Band.

    KEEF HARTLEY BAND (again)

Dino Dines comes back to the band for a while:

    KEEF HARTLEY BAND #7
    ?-Dec 70
    Miller Anderson
    guitar, vocals
    Gary Thain
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Keef Hartley
    drums

But the new members don't stay long time in the band, and they leave the band in December 1970, after recording some superb sessions for BBC Radio 1.

The band released Overdog, still with help from Dino Dines on keyboards and Colosseum drummer Jon Hiseman.

    MILLER ANDERSON BAND

After releasing his solo album, Bright city, Miller Anderson assembled a band to make some concerts. Although he didn't tour, there are at least some sessions for the BBC in 1971. He called many of his friends that played in the album:

    MILLER ANDERSON BAND #1
    1971
    êKeef Hartley Band
    êKeef Hartley Band
    Miller Anderson
    guitar
    Gary Thain
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Pete Wingfield
    keyboards
    Lyn Dobson
    flute
    Eric Dillon
    drums
    Keef Hartley Bandê
    Keef Hartley Bandê

They performed 4 songs for those sessions: ´To whom it may concern´, ´Shadows ´cross my wall´, ´On the ship to nowhere´ and ´High tide, high water´.

    HEMLOCK

Around January 1973, Miller Anderson formed his own band with Mick Weaver, called Hemlock:

    HEMLOCK #1
    Jan 73-1974
    êKeef Hartley Band
    Miller Anderson
    guitar, vocals
    Jim Leverton
    bass
    Mick Weaver
    keyboards
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Eric Dillon
    drums
    Savoy Brownê
    Savoy Brownê
    Savoy Brownê

They released a self-titled album, Hemlock, with help from Pete Willsher on steel guitar and Miller´s mate Chris Mercer on sax. They toured supporting Procol Harum in England in March 1973, followed by another tour supporting Savoy Brown and Uriah Heep. The band in the tour was advertised as Miller Anderson With Hemlock.

In the tour, the chemistry between Kim Simmonds (leader in Savoy Brown) and Miller finished with the offer of forming a band together (a variation of Savoy Brown called The Boogie Brothers), and Miller took Hemlock´s rhythm section with him, so Hemlock´s life was quite short.

    AND THEN

Dino was to join David Bowie live band, but finally, he joined instead glam band T.Rex, commanded by the great, much-missed Marc Bolan.

    T REX

In November 1974, Dino Dines joins T Rex:

    T REX #?
    Nov 74-Dec 74
    Marc Bolan
    vocals, guitar
    Micky Finn
    percussion, vocals
    Jack Green
    guitar
    Steve Currie
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Gloria Jones
    keyboards, vocals
    Davy Lutton
    drums
+ 2 backing vocalists. Who were they?

They recorded the album Bolan´s zip gun.

After an American tour, Jack Green and long-time member Micky Finn left in December 1974.

This is the new lineup for T Rex in January 1975:

    T REX #?
    Jan 75-1975
    Marc Bolan
    vocals, guitar
    Tyrone Scott
    guitar, vocals
    Steve Currie
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Gloria Jones
    keyboards, vocals
    Davy Lutton
    drums

Their new album was Futuristic dragon. But Tyrone Scott didn't last too long in the band.

Now, Marc Bolan assumes all the guitar duties in T Rex. This should be still in 1975, I think:

    T REX #?
    1975-Aug 76
    Marc Bolan
    vocals, guitar
    Steve Currie
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Gloria Jones
    keyboards, vocals
    Davy Lutton
    drums

Gloria Jones left the band in August 1976 to become a mother.

And then, Marc Bolan changes T Rex completely, only keeping Dino, who recruits his old mate Miller Anderson:

    T REX #?
    Aug 76-1977
    Marc Bolan
    vocals, guitar
    Miller Anderson
    guitar
    Herbie Flowers
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Tony Newman
    drums
    Donovan Bandê

They only released an album, Dandy in the underworld. With lots of guests and former members: Gloria Jones (backing vocals), Scott Edwards (bass), Steve Currie (bass), Paul Humphrey (drums), Paul Fenton (drums), Davy Lutton (drums), and from Gonzalez: Chris Mercer (sax), Steve Gregory (flute), Bud Beadle (flute, sax), Colin Jacas (backing vocals).

Miller left the band to join Donovan for a tour.

With Miller Anderson´s exit, T Rex becomes a quartet again:

    T REX #?
    1977-Sep 77
    Marc Bolan
    vocals, guitar
    Herbie Flowers
    bass
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
    Tony Newman
    drums
    (died)ê

But soon after, Marc Bolan´s tragic death happened in a car accident, on September 16th, 1977.

Since that, dozens of post-humous albums have been released: some are live, some contain unreleased tracks, outtakes, etc. The original albums have also been reissued with lots of bonus tracks.

    AND THEN...

And then, I haven't known of any musical ventures by him for many years. He probably kept on playing sessions, but I don't have more info. Can anybody help, please?

    X-T-REX

As we can guess by the name, X.T.Rex was a sort of tribute to T.Rex. Miller and Dino Dines team with singer Darryl Read around 1993:

    X-T-REX #
    ?
    Darryl Read
    vocals
    Miller Anderson
    guitar
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
+ others unknown to me (maybe Paul Feldon?)

    They played a British tour.

    T REXTASY

During the last years, Dino Dines was usually making guest appearances with another T. Rex tribute band, called T Rextasy, led by singer Danielz.

    T REXTASY #
    Danielz
    vocals
    Dino Dines
    keyboards
+ others unknown to me. Help!

I think there are some live recordings by the band, joined by him and mate Miller Anderson. Can anyone confirm me that, please?

And next thing I knew was very sad news. On January 29th, 2004, Peter Dines died. Rest in peace.

    QUESTIONS:

    01. Did Dino play with Donovan?

    02. He also played with The Hollies and PP Arnold, but I can't find details. Help, please!

    03. Which was his relationship with the band Flasher? He appears in one of their albums (see below for the credit).
